If you are looking at this page on our website, you are already probably aware that poor insulation and insufficient seals around drop down attic stair openings can waste a significant amount of energy during both the heating and cooling seasons. The majority of drop down attic stairs and ladders provide little or no insulation from the extreme temperatures commonly found in attics. This lack of insulation can be both costly and uncomfortable, especially during the winter months in many parts of the US causing noticeable temperature changes in the living space near the attic access. With the high costs of today's energy, a well insulated attic stair opening cover can quickly pay for itself.

Leaving an attic stair opening uninsulated can be as uncomfortable and energy inefficient as leaving a window cracked open all winter long.

There are several attic stair cover products on the market that target this problem. However, many of them offer little insulation and are designed to simply reduce drafts that may pass through open cracks around the attic stair opening. Several products require the use of adhesive-backed Velcro to secure a cover to the opening which not only reduces the insulating efficiency of the cover, but also can be easily dislodged or damaged after being repeatedly stepped on during access to the attic. Also available are hard shell covers that lack insulation and require a precise installation. Such attic capping products require the installation of mounting hardware in and/or around the attic opening that interferes with attic access and can cause a potential tripping hazard. Other competing products are constructed of Styrofoam material which can easily be broken and does not conform to irregularities on the attic floor which results in a poor seal.

To address the above issues we have developed a well insulated attic stair cover that is simple to install with no assembly required. Constructed of very durable, yet flexible polyethylene closed cell foam in a thickness of nearly five inches, our solution is a universal cover that fits all drop down attic stairs products on the market that have openings up to 30” x 54”.

Over time the absorption of moisture causes a significant decrease in the performance of open faced insulation such as fiberglass.

Our closed cell foam is protected by a rugged skin that prevents moisture absorption and provides a surface that is easy to wipe down if necessary. While the actual insulating properties will vary by installation (depending primarily on the flatness of the attic floor surrounding the opening), the foam in our insulated attic stair door cover provides an R-Value in excess of R-20 which is higher than the surrounding attic floor insulation in many houses. Using our simple and secure dual strap Load Lock® hinge system our system can installed in minutes using two Stainless Steel screws (included) using only a Phillips head screwdriver.

To install, simply position the cover over the attic ladder access hole and screw the pre-drilled strap hinges of the cover to the attic floor. We guarantee that no other product is easier to use or install.

This simple installation allows our cover to be easily opened and closed without limiting clearance around the attic stair opening!

Our cover can also be opened and closed from inside the attic to prevent cold air from pouring down into the living area when the attic stairs are opened. When properly installed and in the closed position, our rugged system is able to support weights in excess of 400 lbs! Other systems brag about supporting lesser weights concentrated exclusively around the edges where loads would rarely be applied. Ours can support its full capacity near the middle!
